Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool Re-Tile and Restoration Project, Sydney CBD

Metz Project Services completed a re-tile & restoration project at iconic Sydney CBD landmark Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool in 2025.

The extensive remediation works were completed for the City of Sydney on time and on budget, despite challenges posed by wet weather and complex logistics and technical challenges posed by the unique location on the water of Sydney Harbour’s Woolloomooloo Bay.

Works were conducted outdoors during a particularly wet winter, requiring careful planning to keep the program on track for an opening in time for the peak spring/summer swim season.

Site access was limited by the topography of the site and existing surrounding structures. All removals required the use of conveyor belts spanning the width of the site, while materials and equipment had to be craned down to the level of the pool floor or concourse.

The install required appropriate materials to withstand the challenges of the unique location, on the water at Sydney Harbour, the largest harbour in the world. Metz’ specialty in-house manufactured materials were key to the success of this project, including sulphate resistant tile adhesives and epoxy products.

To ensure compliance with Australian standards and necessary adhesion coverage, adhesion tests were conducted every 4sqm. Over 250 tests were undertaken for the floor of the 50m pool alone.

Despite the many challenges posed by the scale, technical complexity, and weather conditions of this re-tile and restoration project, Metz Project Services delivered the works on time and on budget, to the high standard our clients have come to know and expect.
